Back in colonial times, one of the big contributors to the American Revolution was tied to an event that has come to be called the Boston Tea Party. Surrounding this event was the issue of taxes being levied on tea by the British government. After the Revolution, provisions were made in the United States Constitution that made it illegal to levy taxes on citizens without having appropriate representation in the governmental process associated with establishing the tax.
