The concept of the teenager is a relatively new one, dating back only fifty years. Before then, boys made a supposedly uncomplicated move into manhood and girls into womanhood. The notion of an intermediary stage of rebellion and experimentation came into vogue with the postwar boom in lifestyle opportunities, university education and consumerism.
