I feel like everything I was able to accomplish here at Manhattan Center was really standing on the shoulders of the brother that had gone before me. It is truly his inspiration and his passion that still resides in the walls of this building and it fills me everyday that I walk in here and I realize, you know what, it's just so satisfying to be able to fulfill and to carry on my brother's vision and my Father's vision."

An Introduction to the Theoretical Perspectives of Sociology
Sociologists have covered a broad amount of material in their accumulated studies. Some, like Karl Marx, studied broad topics related to the whole of societies. He theorized that the root of human misery lies in the uneven distribution of wealth in society. Others, like Emile Durkheim, focused on more concise topics. He concentrated much of his effort on determining why certain sects of people are more apt to commit suicide than others. Still others, like Max Weber, studied patterns in culture throughout history to determine how much a social group can affect one's life. Though many sociologists study different topics, all use their recorded data to produce theories. These theories suggest how certain parts of the world fit together and how they work. If you break theories down further, you can sort them into three distinct categories: symbolic interactionism, functional analysis, and conflict theory. All three can use different observations to prove the same point.

Common Potential Weapons
Even though this problem has been with us for some time now, recently, in my part of the world it has been brought to the forefront once again. I am talking about us transporting items in our vehicles that can become a weapon in the event of an accident. That is, items that we carry in our vehicles without securing them.

Canada's Attempt to Catch-Up
While many countries across the globe are beginning to resurface from the depths of a global recession, this is not the case for Canada. Needless to say, this has many Canadian economists concerned. Despite former positive statistics and promises, Canada is not on its way out of the recession. The fact remains that Canada is still more than knee-deep within the current economic state.

Generation X (1965-1976)
1970 was the generation I was born into and our parents were either hippies or only one went to work for money each week and one stayed home to take care of the children. I think our generation deserves much more respect than we receive as we were in the beginning times of all this technology and changes in careers and what was expected of women today.

The Establishment of a Structure
My examination of those old notes, revealed some information about the Recovery Center that I had mentioned in an earlier article. According to my notes, here is what the original plans were for the present Recovery Center. It was going to be called an Urgent Care Center. It was meant to reduce the caseload of mental patients being seen in the emergency room at Brotman Hospital.

Judge, Jury and Executioner
A 40-year old man was revealed to be a "person of interest" in the abduction of a 4-year girl. His life was destroyed when the media published his picture and his profile. He turned out to be completely innocent but nobody bothered to offer apologies. How long will we tolerate that kind of injustice? When will the media be forced to be accountable for their actions?

The Battle of Culloden
The battle that took place at Culloden on April 16, 1746, was the final clash between the Jacobites and the Hanoverians. This was the last battle fought on mainland Britain. The argument that led up to the fight was between Bonnie Prince Charlie (the Jacobites) who believed that his father had a claim to the throne, and the Duke of Cumberland (the Hanoverians) whose father was King George II.

Feeding the Hungry - Nourishing the Soul
It is indeed true that many of us may spend our entire lives searching for a religion, philosophy or spiritual leader to guide us upon our lifelong journey. For Les Stott, for example, the decision to open Kampuchea House became an answer to a question that would change his life forever.

Can You Really Change a Traffic Signal With Your Headlights?
Good morning readers, today I am going to talk about the popular belief that flashing headlights will change traffic signals to green. Not a day goes by that I don't see someone flashing their lights in hopes that the signal will turn in their favor. The theory is that the traffic signal will detect the flashing lights and assume that an emergency vehicle is trying to cross the intersection, thus changing the light to green.

Swine Flu Virus - Is it Anything More Than Media Hype?
The Swine flu Virus seems to be a pandemic under construction, fueled by the Media, but where did it originate? European Newspapers reported already on April 28, that the numbers of casualties in Mexico were sharply corrected downward form "over 150" to a mere 5 confirmed deaths. The 2,500 suspected cases became 26 cases on April 29. Even those reports are not conclusive and anyone familiar with healthcare in Mexico knows that the conditions are conducive to rapid spread of any diseases.

Costa Mesa Car Accidents Linked to Freeway Mentality, DUIs and Red-Light Runners
Costa Mesa car accidents are overwhelming the city. With a population over 110,000 and growing, Costa Mesa, California, continues to suffer too many car accidents, which experts blame on a variety of problems. Among these problems is a troublesome intersection--one of the busiest in Orange County--situated near several off- and onramps to the San Diego Freeway. Cars in the vicinity of South Coast Plaza, the Metro Pointe shopping mall, and several high-density residential areas often overload traffic arteries.

After watching the G-20 riots where self-proclaimed anarchists worked to destroy property and bank buildings one has to wonder if there is a solution. Pigs, Relativity, Statistics and What Sells
I am blown away by the psychosis going on worldwide about this new flu virus that very sadly killed a number of people in Mexico. Idaho Amends Daycare Laws
People had long been complaining about the state of childcare centers in Idaho, one of the lowest ranked in the nation, where smaller care centers are not even required to have a working telephone or smoke detector and where the child-staff ratio is far from being ideal. In response to the complaints and dissatisfaction of the population, the Idaho Senate voted unanimously to approve a daycare licensing bill. Senate Bill 1112 was extensively amended by the House, causing many senators to pose strong objections to the House changes.

Should a Bomb Dog Know More Than Its Handler?
Prior to 9/11, Work Dogs International imported, trained, and sold approximately 14 explosive detection dogs to and from our bomb dog facility per year. More than half of these trained bomb sniffing dogs were export ed to the Middle East to work with military police and security units. After 9/11, however, requests for qualified dogs and handlers rocketed to 80 bomb dog detection teams per year. Currently that number stands at 30 per year. In short, the days of a sloppy looking handler shuffling up to search a building with an elderly bomb sniffing dog are over.

Why We Love Bad News and How it Supports the Recession
Why is most news bad news? To apply positive psychology and brain research knowledge to our attitudes and behaviors with relation to our current economic conditions, we can encourage our news deliverers to present a balanced and multi dimensional point of view. Giving us the bad news, so that our brains are hard-wired into a negative state, will just reinforce the current negative economic climate. The best thing people can do toward a more positive, optimistic frame of mind is to avoid seeing and reading negative news about our economy on a frequent basis.

The Evolution of Human Genius
Our world has converged into an increasingly interconnected, heterogeneous community of people belonging to different cultures and ethnicities, speaking different languages, and getting ever greater opportunities to interact and communicate with each other. The greater possibilities for interaction between cultures that were spurred in the twentieth century by advances in transport such as air travel were not available to people of ages bygone; the advances in information and communication technology achieved at the turn of this century were not available only a few decades earlier. The communications revolution of recent times is every bit as groundbreaking as ...

Did You Know That by Law Your Seafood is Being Traced? Why Not Trace it Too?
Organizations like the International Standardization Organization (ISO) are setting guidelines internationally for how governments and companies can follow their food production from processing to distribution. However, Alaskan seafood traceability is already mandated by law to ensure that if a product says that is Alaskan, that its path from ocean to the grocer can be documented. This implies knowledge of producers, good record keeping during processing, adequate labels, and a tracking system that functions from catch to retail. These and other steps, such as monitoring and surveillance of shipments, allow truth in advertising and empower consumers to choose wisely and sustainably.
