Female circumcision is still practiced in many countries despite the efforts of governments to make it illegal. Children in some immigrant families are being subjected to female genital mutilation because the cultural beliefs about female circumcision are so strong. Understanding the ethical issues in regards to female circumcision requires the acceptance of the moral obligation to protect weak and vulnerable members and many countries have passed laws making the practice illegal.
